Garter Stitch Goodness
I am with Jared Flood aka Brooklyntweed in my endless fascination with the squishyness and and geometry of the garter stitch. And especially for children’s patterns I can hardly resist a cute garter stitch garment. When Berenike was small I made her a Tomten jacket from Elizabeth Zimmermann’s Genius pattern. It was a much loved garment and grew with her for quite some time.
When I saw „Snug“ on Ravelry I was instantly hooked. I had some Cascade Ecowool left and instantly cast on.
Unfortunately my gauge turned out a bit on the tight side so the one year size ended up a tad too small for Mr. T 🙁 He looks darn cute in his Snug, don’t you think?! It’ll go to the present box for some other little boy or girl.
The construction was a bit involved and I have to admit while I had no trouble following the instructions I did not overly care for all those provisional cast-on/cast-off maneuvers. Instructions based on garter stitch ridges instead of measurements would have been cool, too. I found the stretchy bind off not necessary.
Not sure I’ll be doing this one again. I might just go with another Tomten instead. If I should do it again I would go up a needle size, work the smaller size in width but the larger on in length and try to make the hood deeper.
